Origin/meaning

The town of Jílove, situated upon the Sazava river, is one of the oldest mining towns in Bohemia. It is not known when it received town or city rights, but it is mentioned as a city in the 13th century. King Charles IV promoted Jilove to a Royal Mining Town, endowing it at the same time with important privileges. Since that time the town has used the Bohemian Lion in its seal and arms.

The crowned W was added in 1477 by King Wladislav II.
