JAMES ALOYSIUS GRIFFIN
Born : February 27, 1883
Deceased : August 5, 1948
Bishop of Springfield in Illinois, 1924-1948
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The personal arms are based on the arms of a Griffin family used as a canting symbol for his last name. The scallop was added as a symbol for St. James, his patron saint.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
