Origin/meaning

The personal arms of the bishop are based on the arms of Ameland, where the Archbishop was born. The gold can in the arms also symbolise the rays of the sun, as an allegory for God, and a moon as a symbol for the Catholic Church.

The motto is taken from Psalm 117.
