Origin/meaning

The Cardinal's father was a John Newman, banker, who married in 1799 a Jemima Fourdrinier. He used a coat of arms made up of the Newman and Fourdrinier arms impaled. It was in use by the Cardinal's father before Newman was born (1801), and it is clear that Newman continued to use the arms without further thought.

The arms adopted by John Newman at least by his marriage in 1799 and employed by his son some eighty years later, are those found in a grant to a John Newman, "citizen and chirurgeon of London" dated 1663 at the College of Arms. It is unlikely that this Newman was an ancestor of the Cardinal and thus the father of the Cardinal had no right to make use of these arms. It must be assumed therefore, that John Newman had probably assumed the arms without right about the time of his marriage into the armigerous Fourdrinier family.

The meaning of the original Newman arms is not known.

The motto - Heart speaks to heart - is a quotation from the works of St Francis of Sales, to whom our cardinal had an especial devotion.
