Wappenspruch: TESTIFICARI EVANGELIUM GRATIAE DEI

Origin/meaning

The first quarter is based on the arms of the Diocese of Augsburg, and typically used by the auxiliary bishops of the diocese. The second quarter shows the Augnus Dei, symbol of St. John Baptist, the patron saint of the bishop.

The base shows three scallops, symbol for the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The bishop has been the chairman of the society of pilgrims for many years. The cross behind the shield also refers to this, being the Cross of Caravaca in Spain.

The motto also refers to the Agnus Dei.
