Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
Butte, Montana, Bishop Willging's home Diocese, is expressed by the silver chevron, the mountain on the field of green to which the Blackfoot gave the name: Land of Shining Mountains. The large fleur-de-lys below the chevron is the symbol of St. Joseph, Bishop Willlging's patron saint. The two smaller fleur-de-lys on either side of the chevron recall his graduation from St . Joseph College and the name of his patron saint, St. Aloysius, chosen by the Bishop at his confirmation.
The chief of a silver crescent on a field of blue, is the symbol of the Immaculate Conception.
