KLAIPĖDA COUNTY
Lithuanian | blazon wanted |
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on July 7, 2004.
The origin of Klaipėda county is the Klaipėda land (Klaipedos kraštas/Memelgebiet in German), the autonomous administrative unit, established in 1918 and joined to Lithuania in 1923. From 1939-1945 the area was formally returned to Germany. It was returned to Lithuania in 1945 and called Klaipėda county (apskritis).
In 1950 the Klaipėda county was abolished, and the Klaipėda province (sritis) was established. It was abolished in 1953 as well as the other provinces of Lithuania. In 1994 the Klaipėda county was re-established.
The new county arms are based on the arms of the city of Klaipėda and the old seals of the city and the surrounding region. The oldest seal dates from the late 13th century.
The seal shows three towers of castle behind the castle wall. The middle tower has the cross of Teutonic Order. Under the wall there is probably water.
Even though the seal represneted the German/Prussian rulers, the heraldry commission decided to use this most ancient local symbol. The colors were adopted from the arms of Klaipeda city.
The water in the lowest part symbolizes the Baltic sea and shows the seashore location of the county.
