Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on April 25, 1957.

The arms are based on the seal of the city dating from 1353. The castle in the arms is probably the Luttelinburch, mentioned in 1163, but nowadays it is not known where the castle actually was situated. The village was first mentioned in 1156 when the bishop of Lübeck ordered the building of a church in the village.

In 1275 city rights were granted by count Gerhard (I) of Holstein. The small arms in the arms are the arms of the counts of Holstein. The banners with the roses and the two stars are of unknown origin. As the original seal is not well preserved, there has been much speculation over the objects on the banners, and if the banners were banners at all, not feathers. In the end of the 16th century the foot of the arms disappeared, only the tower was used. Also the number of the small stars starts to change, sometimes there are none, sometimes 2, 4 or 6.

In 1957 the number was set on two as in the oldest seal.
