German Gold, aus dem unteren Schildrand wachsend, silbern nimbiert, Johannes der Täufer mit schwarzem Haar und Bart, im blauen Gewand über schwarz gegürtetem silbernen Untergewand; mit der rechten Hand weisend auf das auf seinem linken Unterarm auf einem silbernen Buch ruhende, golden nimbierte, silberne Gotteslamm mit Siegesfahne – rotes Kreuz auf Silber – am roten Kreuzstab.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 25, 2010, but are much older.

The arms show the local patron saint of the diocese of Merseburg, to which the city hostorically belonged, St. John Baptist, holding a Bible and the Paschal lamb (Agnus Dei). The composition already appeared on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from before 1500. The colours were not known, Hupp showed the field golden, see below, whereas in the mid 20th century the colours were changed to the image above left.
