The typical Frisian spear and shield are taken from the former Amt [[Rüstringen]], to which the village historically belonged. The two crosses of St. John refer to the medieval monastery (Commanderies) of the Order of St. John in the village of Roddens and a small priory thereof in Sick in the municipality.
 
The colours are those of the original [[State of Oldenburg]], as the area became part of Oldenburg in 1531.
