LARGS

Incorporated into : 1975 Cunninghame (1996 North Ayrshire)

Arms (crest) of Largs

Official blazon

Barry wavy Argent and Azure, a dragon-headed galley Sable in full sail, the mainsail Gules, charged with a lion rampant imperially crowned Or, armed and langued Azure, supporting between the paws a battle-axe erect in pale Argent; on a chief Vert, three thistles slipped Or, flowered of the Fourth.

Above the Shield is placed a Burghal Coronet.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on May 4, 1931.

Largs was created a Burgh of Barony 1595.

The arms are really a heraldic version of the "picture" of the Battle of Largs (1263) which appeared on the seal adopted by the Burgh in 1892.

The three thistles are in the Scottish Royal colours and stand on a green field to denote the victorious army of King Alexander Ill which repelled from the land the Norwegian invaders from the sea; the latter are represented by the black Viking ship, which bears on its sail the Royal Arms of Norway.
