Origin/meaning

The oldest seal of the city dates from 1738 and showa a lute between two flowers. The lute (Laute) is a canting symbol. In the 19th century the city adopted the St. Lawrence bell (Laurentiusglöcke) as it arms. The bell dates from 1512 and shows St. Lawrence and the grill on which he was killed.
