In Blau mit goldenen Lilien bestreut ein linksschauender Ritter in silberner Rüstung, mit der Rechten auf ein silbernes Schwert gestützt dabei einen gotischen Schild haltend, darin in Rot aus einem grünen Dreiberg wachsend drei gestielte silberne Lilien, in der Linken an silberner Lanze eine Turnierfahne in den Schildfarben.

Origin/meaning

The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, which dates from the 13th century. The knight is probably St. Simplicius, patron saint of Fulda, as the city was ruled by the Bishops of Fulda. The stars on the seal gradually changed into small fleur-de-lis. The small shield and banner are also used as arms of the bishops, see Fulda). There is one picture of the arms from 1536 in which the small shield showed a castle instead of the lilies. Its origin is not known.
