===Origin/meaning===
The arms are based on the first seal, granted together with the city rights in 1727 by King Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia. The seal showed the anchor with a horizontal linden tree branch. The anchor and the linden tree are probably derived from the arms of the Counts of [[Tecklenburg]]. These originally used water lily leaves, which were later described as linden leaves. The counts also used an anchor for some time in their arms.

These arms showed a mountain in the base of the shield with the three water lily leaves of Tecklenburg. On the mountain there was a small shield with two blue bars. These are the arms of the Lords of Münster, who lived on the Vortlage castle near Lengerich.
