Origin/meaning

The arms are a combination of the arms of the city of Liège, the Duchy of Bouillon and the counties of Franchimont, Loon and Horne.

Liège was governed by a Prince-Bishop since 980. The first bishops used the imperial eagle on their arms. The bishops acquired the county Franchimont in 1000 and Bouillon in 1096. The county Loon was owned from 1182-1190 and again from 1366-1792. Since Prince-Bishop Aarnout van Horne (1378-1389) they also claimed the county Horne (now in The Netherlands).

The arms have been use dcince the creation of the province in 1815.
