Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1942 and confirmed in 1974.

The oldest known description of the arms of Luleå with the two keys dates from 1621. The keys are the symbol of St. Peter, the historical patron saint of the city. The oldest known seal of the district dates from the 15th century and already shows St. Peter holding a key.
