Heraldry of the World Civic heraldry of Germany - Deutsche Wappen (Gemeindewappen/Kreiswappen) |
MÄRKISCHER KREIS (MK)
State : Nordrhein-Westfalen
Additions : 1975 Lüdenscheid (1968 Altena), Iserlohn, Iserlohn-city
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on May 6, 1976.
The lion and the chequered bar are derived from the old Altena arms and are the arms of the Counts of the Mark. The cross in the base of the shield is the cross of the State of Köln, and symbolises the influence of the Bishops of Köln in the area.
Literature : Linder and Olzog, 1996.
