Official blazon

Escudo de verde, sol de ouro, acompanhado em chefe à dextra de um facho e à sinistra de uma lira, ambos de ouro; pé ondado de prata e verde de três tiras. Coroa mural de prata de três torres. Listel branco com a legenda a negro, em maiúsculas: “ MADALENA – VILA NOVA DE GAIA “.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on November 4, 1996.

The sun represents the beach and the wealth of the parish. The torch is a symbol for the old fortress, on which torches were lit at night to navigate the ships near the coast. The lyre is a symbol for the cultural skills of the villagers. The wavy base symbolises the Atlantic Ocean and the green shield the forests in the area.
