Origin/meaning
Mainbernheim received townrights in 1443 and the oldest seal probably dates from the same time, but is only known since 1470. The seal already shows the canting bear (Bär, Bern). All later seals and images show a bear, sometimes standing and sometimes walking. Also, sometimes the bear wears a collar or chain. The colours historically are black and gold, the Imperial colours (Mainbernheim was an Imperial town), but in the 19th century the colour of the bear was sometimes changed to brown.
