Origin/meaning

The arms were used by the municipality, but were never officially granted. The arms refer to the order of St. John, who ruled the municipality for several centuries. The cross is the cross of the order (also known as the Order of Malta), the dove is the symbol for hospitality and peace. The chief shows three fleur-de-lis, the symbol of St. Mary, and thus the fleur-de-lis are a canting symbol.
