The oldest seal of the town dates from the late 16<sup>th</sup> century and shows a canting owl (Eule) on a rock. Later the owl was placed in a shield and the rock was replaced by a small branch. The colours have not changed since the mid 19<sup>th</sup> century, still the owl was often shown in natural colour, see the image from Hupp below:
