Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on October 2, 1939.

During the Roman Empire the area surrounding Matera was already providing meat for Rome and all of Italy and beyond; the area was also used as the wintering area for cattle from the more northern areas of Central Italy where the cattle were grazed during their summer. The area sported multiple ranches for the cattle, hence the bull in the arms. The letter M is the town's initial.
