Origin/meaning
The first quarter shows the motto (..) taken from Luke IV. The golden colour refers to pain and sorrow. The second quarter shows the pierced hands of the Franciscan Order, to which he belonged. The third quarter shows a boat and an axe, which both refer to St. Matthew, the patron saint of the bishop. The fourth quarter shows the rock of St. Peter and the (tropical) palm trees that flourish on the rock, a symbol for the missionary work.
