MICHAEL ERNEST PUTNEY

Born: June 20, 1946
Deceased:

Auxiliary bishop of Brisbane, 1995-2001; Titular Bishop of Mizigi
Bishop of Townsville, 2001-2014

Arms (crest) of Michael Ernest Putney
Official blazon
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms picture the Holy Spirit renewing the church, which is carried across the sea of life and history by Christ who died to give it birth. The ancient ship is the church. Justin Martyr ( c.100-c.165) described the cross as the mast of the church without which it would not be able to move.

The three persons of the Triune God each play their part in the birth and renewal of the church and in its future which is full of hope. The depiction of the church in this way also alludes to the ecumenical movement which is often symbolised in a similar manner.

The Bishop's motto is taken from Zephaniah 3: 17 which promises that God will exult over his people, whom he will renew in his love. Hence in 3: 15-16 we are urged to fear no more and not to let our arms grow weary.
