Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on June 23, 1825 and again on February 19, 1839.

The arms show a canting castle (burg). Middelburg developed as a city in the 15th century under Pieter Blandelin. Middelburg was situated in the Land van Aardenburg region of Vlaanderen at the time and received the arms of Aardenburg in reversed colours.

Only one seal is known from the city, dating from 1730, which shows the arms as granted in 1839 and not as granted in 1825.

Literature: Servais, 1955
