Poikittain jaettu kilpi, jossa kuvataan sen yläkentässä kultaisella pohjalla Suomen marsalkan, vapaaherra C. G. E. Mannerheimin marsalkansauvaa kaksin kappalein vinoristisuunnassa sekä alakentässä mustalla pohjalla ylöspäin suunnattu Savon maakunnan kultainen jousi, jossa jänne, nuolenkärki ja sulitettu pyrstö ovat hopeaa.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on January 15, 1943 and augmented with the decorations on Decembe 21, 1944.

The upper part of the arms show two Marshal's staffs. The town harboured the army's headquarters in the second world war. The lower part is taken from the arms of the province Savonlax. The freedoms-cross was granted in 1944.

Mikkeli became a city in 1838. The first arms were granted in 1842 and showed in the upper half the monogramme of Czar Nicholas I, and in the base the bow and arrow from the Savo region. On a golden bar the date 1838.

In the middle of the 19th century B. Kene proposed new arms for the city, showing the patron saint, St. Michael with the provincial arms and behind the shield two anchors. These arms were never adopted.

After the Finnish independence, the arms were changed. Instead of the monogramme of the Czar, a star was placed in the upper half, the rest of the arms remained the same.
