Origin/meaning

The arms were devised and adopted in 1955, and are based on the oldest seal of the town, which is known since 1587. The arms were again officially granted on September 24, 1974.

The lion in the upper right corner shows the lion of the State of Bamberg, as the area was part of Bamberg until 1803. The Heathen in the upper left corner is derived from the arms of the Lords of Würtzburg, who were appointed vassals of the Bishops and who lived in the local castle since 1577. The lower part probably symbolises the forests in the area.

Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
