French Écartelé: au 1er de gueules au dextrochère de carnation, vêtu d'azur, mouvant d'une nuée d'argent et tenant une épée haute d'argent, garnie d'or et accostée en chef de deux cailloux du même, au 2e d'or à la bande de gueules chargée de trois alérions d'argent, au 3e d'azur semé de croisettes recroisetées au pied fiché d'or et à deux bars adossés du même, au 4e burelé d'argent et d'azur, au lion à la queue fourchue et passée en sautoir de gueules, armé, lampassé et couronné d'or; sur le tout, parti d'argent et de sable.

Origin/meaning

The first quarter shows the arms of the State of Metz. The second quarter shows the historical arms of the former Duchy of Lorraine. The third quarter shows the arms of the former Duchy of Barrois. The fourth quarter shows the arms of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The escutcheon shows the arms of the city of Metz.

The arms reflect the historical regions, parts of which form the present départment.
