Origin/meaning

The Brown Field represents the source of everything that exists - the earth, the womb that nourishes us. The Kente Cloth symbolizes the land and the people who form our origin. The interwoven patterns represent the diversity that makes us a wholly united people.

The Three Rings of Gold are taken from the alleged arms of St. Edmund of Canterbury the patron Saint of the Society of St. Edmund. They also symbolize the unity amoung the three persons of the Trinity.

The border symbolizes liberation or salvation history, the individual struggle of Black People for freedom and meaning and also symbolizes the Salvation History of the whole human family.

The bridge symbolizes the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. It relates to the present history symbolized by the rising sun. It also relates to the origin of the Society of St. Edmund at Pontigny.

The Tablets of the Law are enclosed in the Triangle of Pyramid, thus representing Moses and the Blessed Trinity. They also symbolize the land of our ancestors and our history both secular and Sacred. The setting sun represents our traditions.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
