MOWBRAY

Province : Cape Province
Incorporated into : 1913 Cape Town

Coat of arms (crest) of Mowbray
Official blazon
Afrikaans
English Per fess or and azure; in chief three heads on stakes proper, and in base three golden cups.

Origin/meaning

The original Dutch name of the area was Driekoppen, a reference to the fact that three Khoikhoi “cattle thieves” had been hanged, drawn and quartered there, and their heads afterwards mounted on stakes. An inn in the area was established in the 19th century and was named the Three Cups, this being thought to be the correct translation of the Dutch name.

When the town council decided on an appropriate emblem for the new town, it chose to honour both names: Driekoppen and Three Cups.
