MUIR COLLEGE

Country: South Africa
Campus/location : Uitenhage, Eastern Cape

Coat of arms (crest) of Muir College
Official blazon
Afrikaans blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms are not officially granted.

The arms show the Rampant Lion of Scotland in the first quarter, which honoured the first (Scottish) headmaster. The second quarter shows the Cross from Uitenhage’s coat of arms (from the founder of Uitenhage), General J. Uitenhage de Mist’s family arms.

The third quarter shows a Xhosa Warrior, which represents the Eastern Cape. This figure appears on the seal of the proposed Eastern Cape Colony. Although the division of the Cape Colony into East and West did not occur, a seal was prepared and is on view in the Cuyler Manor Museum. The Xhosa warrior is also a reference to the Frontier Wars, in which the amaXhosa invaded the Cape. Uitenhage was attacked several times during these wars, and the school cadet corps might have played a role in defending the town.

The last quarter shows the Anchor, representing the Cape Colony.

"Nec Pluribus Impar", Latin for "Second to None"
