Origin/meaning

The town was historically part of the State of Bamberg. The oldest known seal dates from the middle of the 16th century and shows already the present arms. The arms appear in colour in the roll of arms of the State of Bamberg from 1603. The lion most likely is derived from the arms of Bamberg, the tower was the local castle tower. The colours of the lion were probably changed to the colours of Bayern in the early 19th century.
