Origin/meaning
The arms are based on the oldest known seal, dating from the early 18th century. The arms show a savage, originally surrounded by vines, but in the present arms by hops, and a shield of unknown origin. In the 19th century the savage was often shown as a supporter, but in 1951 the savage was placed on the shield again.
Hops are an important crop in the area.
Hupp showed in the 1920s the arms without the savage as supporter, see below.
