Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on July 29, 1819 and again in 1928.

The arms show St. Martin, patron saint of the city, cutting his cloak for a beggar.
The composition already appears on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from the 14^th century. Below the horse was a small shield with the double-tailed lion of Bohemia. The city at the time was a possession of the Kings of Bohemia.

All later seals show the same composition, with or without the arms of Bohemia until the early 19^th century. The present arms are in use since 1928 and are based on these seals.

In 1819 suddenly a new shield appears. The new arms show in the upper part the lion of Bohemia, and in the lower half a symbol looking like a capital letter H. The meaning thereof is not known. These arms were sometimes used in the 19^th century and also from 1920-1928.
