Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on June 23, 1877 and confirmed on October 13, 1993.

The arms are based on the oldest seal of the village, dating from the 14th century and used until the end of the 18th century. The arms are those of the Berthout family, who, in the 14th century, ruled the Land van Mechelen region, to which Niel belonged. To distinguish the seal from the many others using the same arms, a letter n was added above the arms.

In 1993 the blazon was updated, but the arms remained unchanged.
