History: formed as a Sub-Unit of No 55 Maintenance Unit at Heywood, Lancashire. Becoming No 217 MU at Ballymena in March 1, 1942.

Badge: Cleaving a cloud a battleaxe bend sinisterwise the haft couped.
Motto: By skill and industry.
Origin/meaning
The badge symbolises the role of separating various Gases represented by the Cloud, into those usaed by the RAF. The badge was granted in January 1958.
