Nohfelden was part of the county of Veldenz, later of the Pfalz and from 1817 to the principality of Birkenfeld (part of Oldenburg). Around 1285 the Lords of Oberstein, as vassals of the Counts of Veldenz, built the local castle. This is represented in the arms by the division of the shield and the lion of the family Von Oberstein. The axes is the lower part represent the copper mining in the village, the axes were used in the yearly parade. The colours in the lower part are taken from the arms of the Pfalz.

Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
