Wappen von Obergünzburg

Official blazon

Gespalten und vorne von Rot und Blau geteilt; hinten in Silber über drei blauen Wellenbalken schwebend das schwarz gekleidete, golden gekrönte Brustbild der herschauenden Hildegard.

Origin/meaning

The arms were first shown on the 16th century seal of the town. The right half shows the red and blue shield of the Abbey and State of Kempten, to which the town belonged until 1803. The left half shows St. Hildegardis, patron saint of the Abbey and the town. The waves in the base symbolise the Günz river. The colours are known since 1561 and the arms were officially granted on 1951.

In the 19th century the arms were sometimes shown rather differently, as the origin was no longer known. The right half was shown as red and silver, whereas the saint was shown as a Moor. The reason for this change is not known.
