The villages then sent a boat to the King of Portugal, then in exile in Brasil. This is shown in the current arms: the lion with broken chain refers to the uprising, the boat to the message to the King. | |||
The old arms also showed the lion, as well as the letter O. This is taken from the medal awarded to the city by King John VI. Th elette rO is obviously also the town's initial. The two heads in the old arms are the old arms of the Algarve region. | |||

Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on July 19, 1928 and new arms on July 11, 1945, which were confirmed on August 14, 1985.
Both the old arms (see below) as the new arms refer to the uprising in 1808 in Olhão against the French occupation troops. It resulted in the expulsion of the French from the Algarve region. The villages then sent a boat to the King of Portugal, then in exile in Brasil. This is shown in the current arms: the lion with broken chain refers to the uprising, the boat to the message to the King.
