Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on November 10, 1819, changed on April 29, 1845 and confirmed on June 3, 1985.

The meaning and origin of the arms from 1819 (see image below) are not known. In 1845 the municipality again adopted the historical arms.

The arms appeared for the first time in the first half of the 16th century and were supposedly the arms of the Lords of Oostkamp. However, the Gruuthuuse family, Lords of Oostkamp at the time, used completely different arms. In rolls of arms in 1560 and 1562 the above arms were again mentioned. The arms appear on the local seal on 1694.
