Origin/meaning

The oldest known seals of the town date from the 14th century and show a crane under a cross. Their meaning is not known.

In the 16th century the present arms appear on the seals and have not changed since. The lion is the lion of the Pfalz, as the town belonged to the Pfalz. The sun and stars symbolise a rising sun, a canting element for the first part of the name (Ost=east, the sun rises in the east). The arms were officially granted in 1651 and again in 1959.
