Origin/meaning

The shield has two parts: the creation (green) and the new creation (blue) Col 3,1-17. The mountain division line refers to the mountains of Lavalleja, the hill of Verdún and Montevideo, where the bishop grew up.

The upper part symbolises the Holy Trinity : the Father (Sun Mt 5,45), the Son (Cross) and the Holy Spirit (Seven flames). The overcoming of evil (red cross, Redemption) by the paschal presence of Jesus Christ (Host with the acronym of the name of Jesus), updated by the gift of the Spirit in the Eucharist, source and summit of the whole Christian life.

In the lower part is the Bible , the written Word of God, which animates the life of the Church. Below, and submerged in all these realities, is the Holy Family of Nazareth : Joseph, Mary and Jesus in the midst of work. Sign of humanity, model of family, of the different states of life and community. As a child, the bishop was formed with the Brothers of the Holy Family and from the youth in the Contemplative Fraternity María de Nazaret.

The motto means " In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit ", it is taken from Mt 28,19 and of the most common, initial, simple and profound Christian prayer that we express every day in the sign of the cross : everything is realized in the only God Trinity of love.
