Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The oak tree is taken from the arms of a Gerety family from Ireland and is thus used here to symbolise the name of the bishop. The two lions in chief symbolise his middle name (Leo) as well as his father (who was also named Leo) and his mother. In the latter case the lion is taken from the arms of a certain Daly family, as his mother's name was also Daly.

The two fleur-de-lys symbolise his training in France (the French royal symbol is a fleur-de-lys) and his devotion to St. Mary.

The crossed keys are the symbol of St. Peter, the patron saint of the bishop.
