Origin/meaning

The frog probably indicates the position of the town in the moors in the 13th century. The arms are supposed to have been granted in the middle of the 15th century, but the document got lost in the 18th century. The oldest known seal dates from 1514 and already shows the frog as the sole symbol. All later seals and arms show the frog. Only in the 19th century the field was sometimes shown red (see arms as shown by Hupp in the 1920s), but otherwise the colours have been as they are now.
