St. John of Nepomuk was chosen by the citizens and provided for King's approval in 1792. St. John of Nepomuk was one of most popular saints in Lithuania of the late 18th century; also his "specialty" is protection against fatalities of water which was very important for town located at the Nemunas river.
 
The arms were definitely used before the granting: a seal is known from 1791. On the picture of charter from 1792 there is also an arched bridge, not mentioned in the text and not shown on the seal. Most likely, in 1792 the clerk red the privilege not closely and just copied the picture of the arms of [[Anykščiai]], which he had drawn some time before.
