PITTSBURGH

State : Pennsylvania

Arms (crest) of Pittsburgh

Blazon

Sable a fess cheeky argent and azure between three bezants each charged with an eagle rising with wings displayed and inverted re guardant sable
Crest: A triple towered castle sable, masoned argent.

Origin/meaning

The arms were adopted in 1925 and are partly derived from the arms of William Pitt, founder of the city of Pittsburgh and Lord Chatham. The chequy bar and the besants are derived from the old family arms, see also Chatham in England. The colours are different however, as are the birds on the besants. The birds, eagles, are a symbol for the US.
