Official blazon

An armed Gryphon rampant, in a Maori challenge stance, carrying a cermonial Taiaha.
Motto: Kai mataara kia totika = Be vigilant, be true.

Origin/meaning

The Gryphon is the heraldic symbol of Guardianship, symbolising the Police Role. The badge was approved in 1979.
