Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on April 6, 1976.

The county was named after Prince George of Denmark, Queen Anne's consort and he is commemorated in the arms by the cross of Dannebrog (the Danish flag). This is surmounted by a stylised representation of a dogwood flower, for the dogwood is the state flower of Virginia and is increasingly to be found in both personal and corporate American coats of arms.

The county centres on Hope Anchor Church, the anchor being the symbol of hope, hence the anchor in the crest. This is entwined with holly to commemorate the fact that holly grows in profusion in the grounds of the church. The Devisal was, in fact, presented to the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors outside the church.

The cardinal birds (Pyrrhuloxia cardinalis) support the arms. This striking and truly heraldic bird is scarlet except for a small black bib and grey legs. It is not only the state bird of Virginia, but is to be found in some profusion throughout the State. The supporters stand on branches of pine, as the county is forested with lob lolly pines and other conifers.
