RNZAF BASE OHAKEA

Coat of arms (crest) of the RNZAF Base Ohakea

Official blazon

A tewhatewha and a flsh of lightning crossed, superimposed over a Pa gate.
Motto: Defensio per vires = Defence through strength.

Origin/meaning

The Flash of Lightning indicates the speed of Jet aircraft stationed at Ohakea. The Tewhatewha a Maori Weapon suggests Attack. The Pa Gate refer to the meaning of the Maori place name Ohakea, which means the stronghold from which the raiding party set forth. The badge was originally approved for RNZAF Station Ohakea in April 1958 and in July 1979 for the Base.
