Origin/meaning

As common in episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The yellow/gold field symbolizes faith, the chi-rho monogram in red/gules, symbolizing Jesus Christ, entwined with the Marian monogram in blue/azure, symbolizing the Blessed Virgin Mary who first plunge into the depth of divine mystery when she gave her fiat to be the Mother of God. The two monograms are superimposed on the figure of a fishing boat with net, depicted proper, symbolizing the personal origin of the bishop who comes from a fishing family. Beneath is the heraldic symbol for water in blue/azure, symbolizing the field of apostolic endeavor to which the bishop is called.

The bishop chose as his episcopal motto the Lord’s instruction to Simon Peter to “put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch” - “Duc in altum” (Lk 5,4), not just to remind him of his humble beginnings as the son of a fisherman, but also to highlight the centrality of his intimate friendship with the Lord on whom his life and ministry depend.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
